Making Fun Accessible for Every Adelaide Child

Hi friends, Marcal here, founder of Inclusive Kids Adelaide and a devoted mother to my beautiful 5 year old boy, who has an autistic neurotype and faces sensory processing difficulties among other things. As a parent, I understand the importance of finding suitable activities, events, and playgrounds in Adelaide that allow our kids to socialise and engage with the community.

However, the process of gathering information and the necessary research can be time-consuming and frustrating. This blog has been created to eliminate that pressure for you—a centralised resource where families can access free information about inclusive playgrounds in Adelaide, including fully fenced playgrounds. Let's dive and see how we will be looking at playgrounds and reporting back to you about their specific features.

1. Fully Fenced Playgrounds:

At the top of our checklist is whether a playground is fully fenced. This safety feature ensures that children with extra needs can explore and play freely, giving parents peace of mind and reducing the risk of potential hazards and keeping our Houdini's safe! 2. Toilet Facilities:

Accessible toilet facilities (or just having toilets onsite) is a vital consideration for families with children who require additional support. Inclusive playgrounds should provide clean and well-maintained toilets that cater to individuals with diverse abilities, ensuring comfort and convenience for all.

3. Shade:

The presence of adequate shade is crucial, especially for children who may have sensory sensitivities or conditions that make them more susceptible to heat-related discomfort. Shade structures or natural shading elements help create a comfortable environment for all children and their families, to enjoy their playtime.

4. Wheelchair Access:

Inclusivity extends to physical accessibility. An inclusive playground should feature wheelchair-friendly ramps, pathways, and designated parking spaces to ensure that children with mobility challenges can easily navigate and participate in the activities provided.

5. Activities for Various Abilities:

A truly inclusive playground goes beyond physical accessibility—it offers a range of activities that suit the diverse abilities of all children. From sensory play areas to adaptive swings and inclusive play equipment, these features promote engagement, socialization, and enjoyment among children of all abilities.

Why is This Important to Families with Children that Have Extra Needs:

For families like mine, finding inclusive playgrounds in Adelaide is not just about fun—it's about creating an environment where our children can be themselves and remain safe whilst in an external and sometimes unknown environment. Inclusive playgrounds provide opportunities for social interaction, sensory stimulation, and skill development. They promote a sense of belonging, acceptance, and understanding for children with support needs, as well as fostering inclusive communities. By having a centralised resource like this blog, we can empower families to make informed decisions, save time, and ensure that our children have access to inclusive experiences that meet their unique needs.
